I May Have Been Bitten By And Elf on the..... Toilet
We've never been an elf on the shelf family. Maybe I should say - I've never been one. Katie brought one home several years ago when the boys were much younger and I asked her to take it back. If I recall correctly, I asked that in the most loving way possible. I've just never been into my kids worrying about naughty and nice lists. Worry about my list, your mom's list - if you've got any worry left worry about what's right and wrong - but I'll spare you the anxieties of fretting over a tattle tale elf and his North Pole boss.
I have to admit, though, through the years I've enjoyed watching everyone else do the elf on the shelf. I'm a creative, and boy can the elf on the shelf be a victim - or beneficiary I suppose - of some wild and mischievous imaginations. I've caught myself envying the places and situations other people found fit for their pet elves. A constant "Oh, I so could have come up with that one." Shortly after Thanksgiving this year, I read an article about an alternative idea for doing the elf on the shelf. Essentially, you have kindness elves who, with all the same shenanigans as their santa's helpers counterparts, deliver daily prompts that will help the family spread kindness and love throughout the Christmas season. They help instill a sense of gratitude. If you have any interest in the article you can read it here - Kindness Elves: An Alternative Elf on the Shelf Tradition. Seeing all the cool things my friends have been doing with their elves this year has made me consider this alternative tradition for our family next year. We're just missing out on too much fun. I was put over the edge this morning when I discovered the elf on the shelf in the photo below:
No family needs to have an elf fishing for goldfish out of their toilet more than mine. I'm sorry, but we are just a fishing in the toilet kind of family. So mark this day. This is the day my mind started plotting our elf on the shelf adventures for next year. There will be lots of love and kindness spread, but primarily for my own benefit, there will be no naughty list.
